Ascension Day / Helatorstai

When: May 5 in 2016

What: This Christian holiday, celebrating the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, takes place on the fortieth day after Easter. Although Ascension Day used to be an important holiday in Finland, especially in the rural areas, it is not celebrated much these days. It is a national holiday, however, so schools and most businesses will be closed.

Opening hours and public transport: Public service offices, banks, post offices, and Alko liquor stores will be closed. Some grocery stores and other shops may be closed and some may have shorter opening hours. Public transport will mostly operate on a Sunday schedule.
