The Fulbright-TUAS Scholar Award enables American scholars to undertake teaching at the bachelor’s and master’s levels at the Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS).

Description of Grant Activity

The grantee will undertake teaching mostly at the master’s level and conduct applied research at Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS). Master’s programs at TUAS are built on multiform studies including problem-based learning processes, lectures and seminars, e-learning and independent work, and are conducted in close co-operation with business life. Master’s students must have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience prior to their studies. Their contact sessions are held usually on two full work days approximately once a month. Due to this, in addition to teaching, the grantee will also take part in TUAS research projects.

The grant will be awarded for the field of leadership and management.  The grant is awarded for a minimum of three months and a maximum of nine months, preferring full study terms (fall, spring or both terms). The academic year runs from August through May (fall semester: September-December, spring semester: January-May). The language of instruction is English. English is widely spoken in academia in Finland and in the country as a whole.

Additional Qualifications:  The grantee must have sufficient experience in teaching in the field of leadership and management. Candidates with academic and relevant professional experience outside of academia are preferred and priority will be given to candidates holding a PhD.

Benefits

The Fulbright – TUAS Scholar Award includes free housing for the grantee and his/her family, arranged and paid for by TUAS. The monthly allowance for a grantee is 2,700 – 4,500 euros per month depending on the expertise of the grantee:

  • For a candidate in the rank of at least an assistant professor and with professional experience outside of academia of at least 5 years in a relevant field 2,700 euros
  • For a candidate in the rank of at least an assistant professor and with professional experience outside of academia of at least 10 years in a relevant field 3,500 euros
  • For a full professor with professional experience outside of academia with at least 15 years of work experience in a relevant field 4,500 euros.

The grant includes a travel allowance of USD 1,800.

The grantee will also be eligible, free of charge, to participate in a Fulbright Finland pre-approved summer school in Finland consisting of courses on Finnish language, culture and society, pending availability of suitable programs. Additionally, the Fulbright-TUAS Scholar Award grantee will receive the full support services provided by Fulbright Finland for all Fulbright grantees in Finland.

TUAS also provides individual assistance in practicalities concerning the grantee’s integration in Turku, the Finnish society and the university. TUAS warmly welcomes all new members of international staff.

The grant is funded in cooperation by the Turku University of Applied Sciences and the Fulbright Finland Foundation (the Finnish Fulbright Commission). The Fulbright-TUAS Scholar Award is a special grant within the Fulbright U.S. Core Scholar Program administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES/IIE).

Application

Applications are submitted through CIES/IIE. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES/IIE) pre-screens the applications in the U.S. and forwards the recommended applications to the Fulbright Finland for final selection.
