Living Costs in Helsinki (2015-2016)

Expense Type Cost (per month unless otherwise noted) Resource(s) Comments from alum
Student Housing (not available for PhD students) € 400-600   I live quite close to Vantaa, a city north from Helsinki, so my rent is much cheaper than most, at € 270 per month.
Groceries/Household Stuff € 200-300   If one doesn't usually eat lunch at the university.
Student Lunch at the University about € 50 per month, € 2,60 per meal. Lunch for PhD students € 5-6 per meal.   If that is a regular part of one's food budget, then € 150-250 is more practical for groceries.
Local Travels Student discount -50 % HSL.fi The discount doesn't apply for doctoral students.
University of Helsinki Student Union Fee € 100-120 per year   The price depends on the university and it includes the Finnish Studen Health Service fee, which allows you to use student health care services which are very low cost.
Healthcare

FSHS: Services free of charge;
FSHS: Fees

www.yths.fi/en One can also go to a health center for even quicker appointments and it is either free or € 16.90ish.
Eating Out ~ €100-150   At 5-7 times during a month.
Student/Social Activities Depends on how much one goes out.   I had months when I would be meeting new people, socializing, and going to student union events very often. With this behavior, perhaps € 200-400 per month.

Overall, one can live an austere month at about € 600-700 per month depending on rent. Realistically with social activities and occasional traveling, €850-1,000 per month. - U.S. student grantee 2015-2016
