I have always wanted my research and expertise to make a difference. The Fulbright Specialist Program in Finland provided that opportunity through a focused project with smart, dedicated academics and practitioners.

- Alex Stepick, 2015-2016 Fulbright Specialist

Finnish higher education institutions, non-governmental organizations, cultural centers, and medical facilities can apply for a Fulbright Specialist for a period of 2 - 6 weeks to collaborate with on projects such as curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities.

For example, a Specialist may:

  • Conduct needs assessments, surveys, institutional or programmatic research
  • Take part in specialized academic programs and conferences in conjunction with other scheduled activities
  • Consult with administrators and instructors of post-secondary institutions on faculty development
  • Present lectures at graduate and undergraduate levels
  • Participate in or lead seminars or workshops at academic institutions
  • Develop and/or assess academic curricula or educational materials
  • Conduct teacher-training programs at the tertiary level

Note: Pure research is not funded via the Fulbright Specialist Program.

Applications for longer (5-6 weeks) visits are preferred, and common applications by two or more Finnish institutions are encouraged.

By implementing their designed project in collaboration with the Fulbright Specialist, host institutions:

  • Gain global perspectives from experienced academics and professionals;
  • Execute projects that require a rapid response or flexible timeline through short-term, year-round exchanges; and
  • Build sustained relationships with individuals and institutions in the U.S.

The World Learning Organization in the United States builds a roster of U.S. specialists in a variety of fields through an open application process. Fulbright Finland Foundation selects  five project proposals from Finnish organizations for a Specialist Program to be forwarded to the World Learning Organization. Finnish institutions can make either an open application for a specialist in a given field or request a specific person from the Fulbright Specialists roster. American scholars have to be accepted to the Fulbright Specialist roster to be considered for the Fulbright Specialist Program.

Finnish higher education institutions and organizations submit a Fulbright Specialist project proposal online. Potential host organizations should review the information and access the link to the online application portal on the Fulbright Finland Foundation website:
