Dear Member of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association,

On behalf of the newly elected 2017 ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association Board, I would like to thank you for being part of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association community in Finland. You can get to know the newly elected Board at this site.

The Board wishes to survey closer on how the members would like to be involved in the Association and find out which type of activities the members would be interested in participating in or helping to organize. Thus, the Board will send out a member questionnaire in the near future. With this questionnaire, we would like to kindly ask you to let us know if you, for example, work at some interesting organization and would be willing to invite Fulbrighters over to meet and greet or if you would be interested in helping to coordinate an Alumni Association event at your city or institution for instance.

In 2016, we exceeded our expectations in the number and variety of events we organized together. The involvement of our volunteers and their ideas for new events was significant and we truly appreciate the loyalty and generosity of all those who have contributed time, effort, or given monetary donations to the Association during the year.

With your support during the past year, we were able to accomplish so much. The activities included:

 • Holiday season get-to-together at the restaurant Jailbird in December

• Fulbright get-to-together in Tampere in November

• U.S. presidential elections 2016 - Pre-election night in November

• Fulbrighter meetup in September in conjunction with the newly selected Finnish Graduate Student Orientation

• Behind the Scenes visit at the Finnish National Ballet & Opera in September

• Building new connections and supporting new incoming grantees and returning grantees through the Fulbright Buddy program and Alumni Welcome Event held annually in August

• Support for the Ambassadorial Award fund that was given in 2016 to Petra Kuivalainen in the annual Fulbright Finland Grant Award ceremony in May at the Helsinki City Hall

• Informal graduation event for Jyväskylä based American Fulbright Grantees in May

• The Spring Gallery hop in April

• Annual General meeting in March

• Welcome Dinner for the new U.S. Fulbrighters in January at the restaurant Linnankellari

The activities for this year have already started. Should you be interested in joining, please check out the Alumni Association web page for more details (section: Events). You can also join the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association’s Facebook group where we post information on the activities. In addition, we will email you information on the activities, so please keep an eye on the emails as well. In order to receive all the information about the forthcoming events, please remember to keep your contact details updated (alumni(a)fulbright.fi).

Building on the Centennial year of Finland and its theme “together”, the Board of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association has decided to launch a membership recruitment campaign. The theme “together” suits well to the whole idea of the Alumni Association that organizes its activities on the voluntary basis to maintain the Fulbright Alumni network in Finland. This year the Board works particularly towards to have a larger number of Alumni as members of the Association in order to make the Fulbright community even stronger.  The Association has been a forum for the Fulbright community in Finland already over 60 years! If you have fellow Fulbright Alumni friends that are not yet part of the Association, please spread the word and encourage them to join to the Association!

Your generosity keeps the Association going, so please renew your membership now. Each membership includes a subscription to the Fulbright Finland News magazine, a printed magazine containing the latest news from the Fulbright program in Finland. You can renew your membership by paying the 25 € annual membership fee. Please make the membership fee payment to the Association's bank account FI24 1323 5000 126448 by June 1, 2017. Remember to include your e-mail address to the message section on the bill. More info about the payment can be found at the Association’s website: www.fulbright.fi/en/asla-fulbright-alumni-association/registration-instructions

Thank you again for your support and for making this Association the best possible.

Feel free to contact the members of the Board if you have any questions on the Association or would like to get more actively involved. We would be very delighted to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Anna Kronlund

Dear Members of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association,

The academic year 2016-2017 has started and we have had an opportunity to enjoy lovely autumn weather. New U.S. grantees to Finland have also arrived. The ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association organized a Welcome Event on 24 August 2016 not only to welcome the new U.S. grantees with a survival bag provided by the association but also to greet the returning Finnish grantees and members of the Alumni Association. The event was held at the Sibelius upper secondary school and the Rector Hannu Rantala hosted it.  We also had a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the music performances by the students of the school.

The members of the Alumni Association had also a fascinating opportunity to attend a ”Behind the scenes visit to the Finnish National Opera & Ballet” on 15 September. External Relations Manager of the National Opera Heidi Almi led the tour. During the tour, the members of the association met with General Director of the National Opera, Päivi Kärkkäinen, and the Opera's Development Manager, Heidi Lehmuskumpu  -- both are Fulbright Finland alumni!

On September 28, the association held a networking event, the “Fulbrighter Meetup”, at the Fulbright Center. It was pleasure to meet with the newly selected Finnish Fulbrighters for the academic year 2017-2018. The Fulbright quiz, with some tough questions, brought together the new Finnish grantees and current U.S. grantees as well as Fulbright Finland Alumni. I would like to thank U.S. alumna Sophia Albov for sharing the “quizmaster” duties with me. The winning team got “Fully Bright” reflectors, what a topical prize indeed.

So far the active season is continuing with different events still to come. The association will organize the U.S. Presidential Election Night on November 7, 2016 at the University of Helsinki. The program will consist of short expert comments on the elections and light refreshments. More detailed information will be send to the members of the association. I warmly welcome everyone to attend, and to discuss and share experiences of the U.S. elections 2016 (please notice that due to limited capacity, the attendance will be limited).

Before the holiday season the association will organize a traditional season’s greetings party. More detailed information will be send closer to the event.

Make sure you have renewed your membership by paying the 2016 membership fee! You can find the payment instructions here. Each membership gives you a subscription to a printed magazine, The Fulbright Center News, covering the latest news of Fulbright Finland programs and alumni, periodic membership letters, invitations to special events, and a possibility of being part of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni community in Finland. If your contact information changes, please remember to send the updates to alumni@fulbright.fi.

On behalf of the association, I would like to thank all the members for contribution to the association.  You are warmly welcomed to attend the forthcoming events to meet and greet your fellow Fulbright Alumni and current grantees. Please do not hesitate to contact the members of the board should you be interested in participating in the organizing of activities or you would like to share some comments regarding the activities of the association. In the meantime, I would like to wish you all a nice autumn!

June 16, 2015

Dear Member of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association,

Before leaving town and heading to the summer cottage for the midsummer festivities, I wish to give you a short summary of the Association’s recent activities.

This year’s ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Ambassadorial Award has been granted to Mauri Sumén. He is a Film Music specialist and will enroll in the Master’s in Film and Media Studies Program at Columbia University as an ASLA-Fulbright Graduate Grantee next fall. The ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Ambassadorial Award is a special award granted by the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association for one of the following year’s Finnish Fulbright Center grantee. The award is a recognition of a candidate that has excellent ambassadorial qualities and has the potential of becoming an exemplary Fulbright grantee. The list of the awardees can be found at the Alumni Association’s webpage. As you know, this grant is supported exclusively by voluntary donations (www.fulbright.fi/en/asla-fulbright-alumni-association/fulbright-finland-future) made either by purchasing the alumni T-shirt, or providing an extra donation for this purpose. I wish to sincerely thank everyone who has supported this year’s grant with your donations!

In May, the members of the Alumni Association had an exclusive opportunity to visit the Innovation Center at the U.S. Embassy together with the current American grantees. The event raised overwhelming interest and because of the limited size of the group visit there were unfortunately a small number of members who did not fit in this time. However, a new visit will be organized in the fall. More information about that will follow closer to the event.

The Alumni Association also spent a very nice afternoon in April during the 3rd Gallery Hop around Helsinki gathering Finnish Alumni and current American grantees.  Some views of the event can be found on the Alumni Association’s webpage.

Please note that the Welcoming Event for the new American grantees and the returning Finnish grantees will take place on Wednesday 26 August 2015. I would like to warmly welcome you all to take part in this event to meet and greet the new U.S. Fulbrighters and returning Finns and welcome them to the Fulbright Center Alumni community in Finland. It is a great networking opportunity! More information about the event will be send closer to the date.

Last but not least, there is still time to sign up to the Buddy Program! Fulbright Buddy Program sign-up has been extended until Sunday June 21. The aim of the Fulbright Buddy Program is to connect Fulbright alumni living in Finland with arriving U.S. grantees to encourage intercultural exchange and mutual understanding. The online form for the sign-up can be found at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ThSMeS2dsbNB08h-sI8n8zrMV1qQEsHuigLujLSzXL4/viewform. For more information on the Buddy Program, please contact Mikael Broas (mikael.broas@aalto.fi).

The Fulbright Center News magazine’s Spring 2015 issue is coming out shortly with many alumni related news and articles. As a member of the Association you will receive your own printed copy in the mail. There will also be an electronic version of the magazine and it will be made available here: www.fulbright.fi/en/fulbright-center/fulbright-center-news

We would be happy to hear any feedback from you! We welcome your contributions to the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Associations activities and invite you to contact the Board Members with any suggestions or comments.

On behalf of Association Board, I wish you all a wonderful summer!

The Board of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association welcomes all current and former grantees to join the Association and to participate in the activities of the Association.
