Saint Lucy’s Day / Lucian päivä

When: December 13

What: Saint Lucy’s Day may not be a national holiday, but it is celebrated in many areas of Finland, especially in areas with larger Swedish-speaking communities. St. Lucy is celebrated as a “beacon of brightness” in the darkest time of year. Every year, the official St. Lucy of Finland is elected and then crowned in the Helsinki Cathedral. A local St. Lucy (Lucia in Finnish and Swedish) may be elected for towns or schools, for instance, and Lucia processions are organized to commemorate the Saint.
