TOEFL iBT - Test of English as a Foreign Language

The TOEFL is the standardized language test most frequently required by U.S. universities and colleges. It is also used as an English-language test in other parts of the world.

TOEFL iBT test in Finland

TOEFLiBT tests are organized in Helsinki. Test registration system informs about test dates and test center contact information. Upon scheduling your test appointment, you will receive instructions regarding your test day: what time to be at the test center, what to bring, and what not to bring along.

Test Structure

The approximately four-hour test consists of four sections, all of which are mandatory:

  • reading
  • listening
  • 10 min break
  • speaking
  • writing

TOEFLiBT test dates and times

TOEFL iBT testing days and times are globally fixed. Available test dates can be checked at TOEFL web site.

The online registration system shows the test date availability in real time. Sign up to create a personalized TOEFLiBT profile when you log-in to the registration system for the first time. You will need your username and password every time you log-in to the system, e.g. to check the test date availability. You can also access your test scores after approximately two weeks from the test using the same user name and password.

Schedule your test appointment online at www.ets.org/toefl.
Credit/debit card (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, Visa) is required for online registration.

Select score recipients when registering for the test or by the night before your test date at the latest.
Your TOEFL test payment entitles you to one printed and one online examinee score record and up to four official score reports that ETS will send 10 business days after the test directly to the institutions or agencies you designate when registering for the test. You can select score recipient institutions when you register for the test, or anytime thereafter by 22:00 (local test center time) on the day prior to the test date.

Please note that if you order score reports after 22:00 the previous evening of your test, there is a  fee per each score report. This applies even if you did not select any of those up to four institutions that your test fee entitled you to select by the above defined deadline.

Please note also that score report recipients can not be designated at the Test Center.

If you have an ETS ID number (i.e. you have created yourself a TOEFLiBT profile online), provide the number on the phone: it will speed up your test appointment scheduling process. The test date, Test Center address, and test starting time will be confirmed over the telephone. You will also be provided with an appointment number, bring it with you when coming to the test.

Rescheduling your test registration

Reschedule your registration no later than four full days before your test date (not including the day of the test or the day of your request). For example, the deadline to reschedule a Saturday test is Tuesday. If your request is not received within four full days in advance, your full test fee will be forfeited. Test administrators are not authorized to make schedule changes.

You can reschedule your test appointment online through your TOEFLiBT profile page, or by phone to the Regional Registration Center for Europe in the Netherlands, tel: +31 320 239 540. To reschedule, you must provide your registration number or ETS ID (which you can find in your TOEFLiBT profile page) and the full name you used to register.

If you cancel your registration no later than three full days before your test date (not including the day of the test and the day of your request), half of the original test fee will be refunded is U.S. dollars.

Test Scores

TOEFL scores range from 0 to 120 points. There is no minimum score that must be passed, since each institution defines its own score requirements. The score is valid for two years.

Scores are posted online 10-15 business days after the test date. You can view your scores online at your TOEFLiBT account for free.

Educational Testing Service will also mail an examinee score record to you 10-15 business days after you take the test. The printed score report that is mailed to you will contain all of the final section scores as well as your total score. In addition to numeric scores, your examinee score record also includes performance feedback that indicates your performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported range can typically do.

Please note that Test Center does not have access to score reports and does not provide score reports.
 

If score report is delayed
If you have not received your score report online (and by mail) one month after the test and/or your designated institutions have not received your score report, contact TOEFL.

Send score reports to universities and other institutions

Your TOEFL test payment entitles you to one printed and one online examinee score record and up to four official score reports that ETS will send approximately 15 business days after the test directly to the institutions or agencies you designate when registering for the test. When registering for the test, select at least one score recipient institution and thereafter score recipients can be added or deleted online up until 22:00 (local test center time) on the day prior to the test date. In case your Institution does not have a TOEFL code, click on 'Add an unlisted recipient' button in order to type the Institution information on the computer.

Please note that if you order score reports after 22:00 the previous evening of your test, there is a  fee per each score report. This applies even if you did not select any of those up to four institutions that your test fee entitled you to select by the above defined deadline.

Order additional score reports

TOEFL score is valid for two years. During that time you may request additional score reports through your TOEFLiBT account.

Proof of identity

You are not allowed to take the TOEFL test if you do not have a proper ID document with you.

A valid identification document for Finnish citizens and EU citizens or citizens of a country that has signed the Schengen Agreement may be:

  • passport
  • driver's license
  • national identity card
  • European ID card

If you are not a Finnish citizen or a citizen of an EU country, or a country that has signed the Schengen Agreement, you must have a passport when you come to the test.
