2016 European Fulbright Conference: Crossing Borders for Global Partnerships

June 18-22, 2016

This international conference brought together Fulbright leaders and cooperating agencies from both sides of the Atlantic to share best practices and plan strategy for future exchanges. Over 90 participants from over 40 countries attended this unique conference.

Friends of Fulbright Finland (FoFF) Event

June 4, 2016, Denver, Colorado

Friends of Fulbright Finland got together in Colorado hosted in the home of alumna Nancy Commins. Six alumni and numerous friends, including Honorary Consul for Colorado, Juha Mäkikalli, enjoyed a summer picnic on June 4.

The orientation day was filled with interactive discussions, important information and shared experiences. Festivities at the Helsinki City Hall crowned the orientation day! A highlight of the evening was the extraordinary musical performance by U.S. Fulbrighter Simon Barrad.

Fulbright Capacity-Building Workshop: Fulbright Center Services & Attracting U.S. Students to Finland

April 6-7, 2016

The workshop aimed to help Finnish higher education institutions build upon their international program through the internationalization services of the Fulbright Center and provided an opportunity for discussion with relevant experts to better reach U.S. students and attract them to study in Finland. Student recruitment specialist and Lead Analyst Nelson Furtado shed light on U.S. students’ motivations and decision-making process.

Fulbright Forum on Education, Innovation, Science and Art

March 17-18, 2016, Jyväskylä

Fulbright Forum in Jyväskylä provided a unique opportunity to hear the U.S. Fulbrighters present on their research in Finland. This year for the first time the Friday afternoon was powered by PechaKucha! Fulbright Forum was organized in cooperation with the University of Jyväskylä.

Fulbright Arctic Symposium: Towards a Sustainable Arctic Future

February 11, 2016, Oulu

The Fulbright Arctic Initiative scholars presented their ongoing research as a part of a broader public symposium that gathered together Arctic scientists, students, policymakers, industry and NGO representatives and other key stakeholders as well as the general public. The event was open to anyone interested in Arctic issues.

Through high level keynotes, panels and interactive discussions, the symposium addressed changes in the Arctic, particularly through the themes of the FAI program (energy, water, infrastructure and health), and contributed to developing strategies and policies for a sustainable Arctic future. Presenters included distinguished scientists and high level policymakers.

Fulbright Arctic Initiative Mid-Term Plenary Meeting

February 8-12, 2016, Oulu

Fulbright Finland together with the Thule Institute of the University of Oulu organized a week-long plenary meeting of the inaugural Fulbright Arctic Initiative – an 18-month collaborative research program for scholars to study and assess the changing Arctic region. This inaugural group of researchers representing all of the eight Arctic Council member countries came together in Oulu in February to discuss their research challenges and for the first time as a cohort to present their work to the public.

12th North American Studies Roundtable

February 5, 2016

The topic of the Fulbright Transatlantic Roundtable was university collaboration in the teaching of North American Studies in Finland. The event gathered together representatives from four Finnish universities, the Canadian and U.S. Embassies, American Resource Center, the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, and the John Morton Center for North American Studies. One of the concrete decisions of the group was to add an event calendar on the web site that collects information on all programs and course offerings in the field of North American Studies at Finnish institutions.

Orientation Seminar for Spring 2016 U.S. Fulbrighters

During the 3-day orientation seminar the new U.S. Fulbrighters got an introduction to Finnish culture, history, arts and society.

Thanksgiving Events

November 26-27, 2015

U.S. Fulbrighters celebrated Thanksgiving by visiting the Fazer chocolate factory with all-you-can-eat chocolate tasting. Bicentennial Chair Lane Crothers hosted a potluck dinner in the evening. On Friday the group was privileged to visit the Parliament Annex where Member of Parliament Antti Kurvinen hosted a lunch, while family members had a chance to visit the Natural History Museum. A fascinating tour at the Espoo Museum of Modern Art EMMA concluded the festivities.

Study Tour: Graduate Admissions and Strategic Enrollment Management

October 25-30, 2015

Delegation from Finnish research universities and Ministry of Education explored best practices and trends in graduate admissions and strategic enrollment management in the U.S. in October 25-30, 2015.  Participants visited institutions in Washington, DC, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and New York, to discuss graduate student recruitment, the application process, student selection, strategic enrollment strategies, and graduate programs.

American Voices 2015

October 9-10, 2015

The twenty-third American Voices Seminar was at the University of Turku on October 9-10, 2015. In the seminar, U.S. Fulbrighters currently in Finland presented on a myriad of topics connected to American history, society, and culture.
