Fulbright Finland Foundation Announces Record Number of Grantees

Over 130 Finnish and American grantees have been selected to date to participate in the Fulbright Finland Foundation exchange programs for the academic year 2021-22.

The most recent selections include 34 Finnish scholars, teachers, students, and professionals who will travel to the United States to study, lecture, or conduct research or professional projects. These awards are supported by the KAUTE Foundation, Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation, Vanderbilt University, Tampere University, University of Helsinki, Finnish National Agency for Education, municipality of Liminka, City of Espoo, City of Oulu, the Finland-America Educational Trust Fund, and the Finnish and U.S. governments.

Additional selections will be made later in the year. In addition, another 22 grantees from Finland deferred their visit from the current year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will also travel to the U.S. during the next academic year 2021-22.

The Foundation’s grantees are convening in May for pre-departure training seminars that the Foundation organizes annually to help its grantees prepare for their stay in the United States.

Respectively, 55 U.S. scholars, students, and professionals have been selected to come to Finland during the academic year 2021-22. In addition, 20 grantees from last year’s cohort have postponed their grant terms in Finland to the upcoming year. Additional awards will be made later in the year, primarily in the short-term Fulbright Specialist Program and the Inter-Country Travel Grant Program. The awards for U.S. grantees are made possible by funding support from Finnish universities and research institutions, private Finnish foundations, the Finland-America Educational Trust Fund, the Finnish and U.S. governments as well as individual alumni and private donors.

With additional awards made later in the year, the Foundation expects to have approximately 140 grantees next year in total. A list of awardees, as of today, is available here: 2021-22 Fulbright Finland Foundation Grantees. The pandemic continues to create uncertainties for the grantees’ preparations for their exchange periods and the Foundation is working closely with all of its awardees to assist them in their individual situations. The Foundation strives to create as much flexibility as possible for the awardees in view of the timing and other details of their grant term.

The Fulbright Finland Foundation is a private, independent, not-for-profit organization based in Helsinki, Finland. With the purpose of promoting a wider exchange of knowledge and professional talents through educational contacts between Finland and the United States, the Foundation collaborates with a range of government, foundation, university, and corporate partners on both sides of the Atlantic to design and manage study and research scholarships, leadership development programs, and internationalization services.
