Fulbright Student Grant Sponsored by the University of Helsinki

The Fulbright Center works with the University of Helsinki to offer an award for a student admitted to one of the University’s International Master’s Degree Programs.

The University of Helsinki is the leading research university in Finland and consistently ranks among the top 20 universities in Europe. The University offers a multi-disciplinary and international study environment and the services and infrastructure, including libraries, laboratories and computer environments, are world-class.

The University offers several International Master’s Degree Programs taught in English. Some of the programs are provided jointly by the University of Helsinki and other Finnish or foreign universities. Several new ones are also in the making. Students in these two-year programs will find themselves in a truly international learning environment with a mixture of students from Finland and across the globe. More information is available at http://www.helsinki.fi/internationalprogrammes/. Additional information on the university can be found at http://www.helsinki.fi/university/.

Benefits

The Fulbright Student Grant sponsored by the University of Helsinki is available for one academic year (9 months). For the year 2008-2009, the award is 1 000 euros per month. Grantees also receive a travel award of 1 600 dollars and an accident and sickness insurance for the grant period. Additionally, grantees receive the full support services provided by the Fulbright Center and assistance with securing quite affordable student housing.

There are currently no set tuition fees for degree students in universities in Finland for the academic year 2009-2010, since education is subsidized by the State through the Ministry of Education. At the University of Helsinki this applies also to the international degree students as well as exchange and visiting non-degree students. Updated information on costs is available at http://www.helsinki.fi/studying/fees_and_costs.shtml.

Eligibility

The Fulbright student award competition is open to American students who hold a Bachelor's or a Master's degree. Academically talented graduating seniors may also apply before having the degree in hand.

For the University of Helsinki sponsored award, preference is given to applicants admitted to one of the University’s International Master’s Degree Programs. However, master-level non-degree students can also be considered.

Application

The Fulbright Student Grant sponsored by the University of Helsinki has a dual application procedure: The Fulbright grant competition and admission to the university.

The Fulbright grant competition
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered on the U.S. side by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Admission to the University of Helsinki
