International Fulbright Science and Technology
Award
International Fulbright Science and Technology Award
for the academic year 2010-2011.
The United States Department of
State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces a
worldwide grant competition for graduate students in Science and
Technology. The International Fulbright Science and Technology award is
intended for Ph.D. study at top U.S. institutions in science,
technology, or engineering. For the academic year 2010-2011, approximately
40 awards will be offered worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique
aptitude and innovation in scientific fields.
The grant is
available for students who plan to complete a Ph.D. degree in the United
States. Eligible fields of study for the International Fulbright Science
and Technology Award include:
aeronautics and
astronomics/aeronautical engineering, astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, biomedical
engineering, chemistry, computer sciences/engineering, energy, engineering
(electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), environmental
science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information
sciences and systems (engineering focus only), materials
science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive
sciences, oceanography, public health (theoretical research focus
only), and physics
All grantees receive tuition, a monthly
stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and
equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference
allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities,
and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three
years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining
expenses toward completion of a PhD.
Applicants are not expected to
have an admission to a U.S. university. The application process will be
handled on the student̵;s behalf by the Institute of International
Education (IIE).
Application instructions
- Candidates
complete an online application and submit it electronically by May
25, 2009. Please read the instructions below before completing and
submitting your application.
- Applicants must be citizens of
Finland. Citizens of other countries should contact the Fulbright Program
in the country of their citizenship. Candidates currently residing or
studying in the United States are ineligible.
- Applicants will
have completed a higher education degree before August 1, 2010.
A
complete application includes the following:
- The online
application must be submitted by May 25, 2009. You can access the

- Print out, sign, and mail the signature form to
the Fulbright Center to the following address: Fulbright Center, Selection
committee for the International Fulbright Science and Technology Award,
Hakaniemenranta 6 00530 Helsinki, Finland.
- Three letters of
reference must be received at the Fulbright Center by May 25, 2009.
Download the reference letter forms here. References should mail their
letters directly to the Fulbright Center to the following address: Fulbright
Center, Selection committee for the International Fulbright Science and
Technology Award, Hakaniemenranta 6 00530 Helsinki, Finland. Letters of
reference can also be submitted electronically. Please see the online
application for instructions. Please ask the reference to submit the
recommendation by May 25, 2009.
- Valid TOEFL and GRE GENERAL score
reports received at the Fulbright Center no later than July 28, 2009.
Applicants
must submit the following academic documents:
1. One certified,
official record (transcript - opintorekisteriote") from each university or
post-secondary institution you attended, even those schools from which you
did not receive a degree or diploma. The transcripts should list the
subjects you studied and the grades you received during each year of your
enrollment.
2. Certified, official evidence of each post-secondary
or university degree, diploma or certificate ("tutkintotodistus") awarded
to you should be included as part of the completed application.
Academic
documents must be received at the Fulbright Center by May 25, 2009 by
mail. Academic documents can also be scanned and attached to the online
application. Please see the online application for instructions.
The
other supplemental forms included in the online application (Report on
Proficiency in English Form, Foreign Student Academic Records, and
Transcript Release Form) are not required at the time of application.
Information
on the TOEFL test
- Applicants will be proficient in English
with a valid TOEFL score of 580 (237 from the computer-based TOEFL, 92
from the internet-based TOEFL) or higher. If you do not have a valid TOEFL
score by the application deadline, you should make arrangements to take
the test on the first available test date and mail a copy of your TOEFL
score report to the Fulbright Center by July 28, 2009. The mailing address
is Fulbright Center, Selection committee for the International Fulbright
Science and Technology Award, Hakaniemenranta 6 00530 Helsinki, Finland.
In addition, you must indicate that you want your score reports sent to
the Institute of International Education (IIE). You must indicate the IIE
code 2326 when you register for the TOEFL test. An IELTS (International
English Language Testing System) score will be accepted in lieu of the
TOEFL score.
Information on the GRE test
- A GRE GENERAL
Exam score report will be required before your application can be
considered for a grant. If you do not have a valid GRE GENERAL score by
the application deadline, you should make arrangements to take the test
on the first available test date and mail a copy of your GRE score report
to the Fulbright Center by July 28, 2009. The mailing address is Fulbright
Center, Selection committee for the International Fulbright Science and
Technology Award, Hakaniemenranta 6 00530 Helsinki, Finland. In
addition, you must indicate that you want your score reports sent to the
Institute of International Education (IIE). You must indicate the IIE code
2326 when you register for the GRE GENERAL test. In addition, A GRE
SUBJECT Exam score report will also be needed for selected candidates in
the following fields of study: biology, biochemistry, cell and
molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics.
Applicants are not required to have a valid GRE SUBJECT test score by the
application deadline. However, it is recommended you find out about taking
the GRE SUBJECT tests as early is possible.
The Fulbright
Center nominates up to two Finnish candidates for the worldwide
competition. Candidates will be invited for an interview, which will be
held on the first week of June 2009 at the Fulbright Center office in
Helsinki.
The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award
is a program administered and funded by the United States Department of
State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). Grantee
selections are made through a worldwide competition by ECA. This grant is
not part of the ASLA-Fulbright Program administered and funded by the
Fulbright Center. However, applicants for the International Fulbright
Science and Technology Award may be considered also for the ASLA-Fulbright
Graduate Grants and/or the Fulbright Technology Industries of Finland
Grants. It is not necessary to complete separate application forms for the
other grant programs.
The Fulbright Center grant programs
ASLA-Fulbright Graduate Grant and Fulbright Technology Industries of
Finland Grant are available both for students seeking a Ph.D. degree in
the U.S. as well as for one year of study and/or dissertation research
in the United States.
