Fulbright Finland Foundation Board Meeting

Aalto University hosted the Fulbright Finland Foundation Board at the newly renovated Dipoli-building.

Centennial Gift from the U.S. Congress

August 21, 2017

On the occasion of Finland’s Centenary, the United States presented a centennial gift of an additional $500,000 to the Fulbright Finland Foundation. The gift was made by the U.S. Congress in consultation with the U.S. Department of State, and it was announced on August 21, 2017 at the Reception at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the Finnish-American Fulbright Agreement and Finland’s Centenary. President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö delivered special remarks at the Reception.

The gift was also announced during President Sauli Niinistö’s meeting with President of the United States Donald Trump on August 28, 2017 at the White House. At the joint press conference after the meeting, President Trump noted that “through the Fulbright program, we are sending more of our best and brightest to Finland, forging lasting connections between Americans and Finns”.

Arrival Orientation for U.S. Fulbright Scholars and Students 2017-2018

August 21-24, 2017

Fulbright Finland introduced the newly arrived U.S. Fulbright scholars and students to Finnish education and research, culture and history, society and language during the orientation week. The program included a Reception at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki, Taste of Finnish Summer Experience with a chance to go to sauna and play Finnish lawn games, Alumni Welcome event at the Sibelius Upper Secondary School and visit to the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Pre-departure Orientation and Grant Award Ceremony for Finnish Fulbright Grantees

The orientation day for Finnish Fulbright Finland grantees was filled with interactive discussions, important information and tips from alumni. Festivities at the Helsinki City Hall concluded the orientation day! The highlights of the evening were the musical performances by the Finnish Defence Forces’ Conscript Drumline, and Fulbright Finland alumna Eva Louhivuori. The Fulbright Award Ceremony and Reception in honor of the 2017-2018 Finnish Fulbright Finland grantees, the 2016-2017 U.S. Fulbright grantees, and the centennial year of the Republic of Finland was hosted by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and the City of Helsinki.

Study Tour: Towards Sustainable Arctic Futures

May 5-13, 2017

Fulbright Finland Foundation organized the 8th expert study tour to the United States under the theme “Towards Sustainable Arctic Futures.” The program took place in Alaska and coincided with the transfer of the Arctic Council Chairmanship from the U.S. to Finland. The Fulbright Finland Foundation brought a ten-member multidisciplinary expert delegation on a study tour from Finland to Alaska for the week of the interchange. The tour addressed the Foundation’s key strategic priority area, the Artic, as well as the Foundation’s fundamental purpose of promoting a wider exchange of knowledge and professional talents through educational and scholarly contacts between Finland and the United States.

Fulbright Forum 2017

March 15-17, 2017

Timely talks! Interesting observations! Fascinating findings!

The fourth annual multidisciplinary Fulbright Forum on Education, Innovation, Science and Art in Finland showcased U.S. Fulbrighters' timely research in Finland. The seminar was full of inspiring presentations with topics varying from STEM and 21st Century Education to Music and Convenience Voting among others. The seminar was organized by Fulbright Finland with support from the U.S. Embassy Helsinki and the University of Jyväskylä. The seminar demonstrated the importance of open dialogue and engaging the public in science.

Spring Orientation for 2016-2017 U.S. Fulbrighters

January 25-27, 2017

During the orientation seminar the Fulbrighters were introduced to Finnish education system as well as Finnish sports, culture, history, and language.

Thanksgiving Fulbright Finland Style

November 24-25, 2016

U.S. Fulbrighters celebrated Thanksgiving by visiting the Fazer chocolate factory with all-you-can-eat chocolate tasting. Bicentennial Chair Patrick Miller hosted a potluck dinner in the evening. On Friday the group was privileged to visit the Parliament Annex where Members of Parliament Petri Honkonen and Ville Tavio hosted a lunch.

American Voices 2016

October 7-8, 2016

The 24th American Voices Seminar took place at the University of Turku on October 7-8, 2016. The U.S. Fulbrighters currently in Finland presented on a wide array of topics related to American culture, history and society.
