Arrival Orientation for 2018-2019 U.S. Fulbright Scholars and Students

August 27-30, 2018

Fulbright Finland introduced the newly arrived U.S. Fulbright scholars and students to Finnish education and research, culture and history, society and language during the orientation week. The program included a Reception at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki, Taste of Finnish Summer Experience with a chance to go to sauna and play Finnish lawn games, Alumni Welcome event at the Sibelius Upper Secondary School and visit to the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Pre-Departure Orientation and Fulbright Finland Award Ceremony and Reception for Finnish Fulbright Finland Grantees 2018-2019

Finnish Fulbright Finland grantees took part in the pre-departure orientation in Helsinki at Kuntatalo on May 16, 2018. The exiting day concluded at Helsinki City hall where the grantees received their scholarship diplomas. American grantees in Finland were invited as well to the award ceremony and reception. Fulbright Finland grantees, alumni and Friends of Fulbright Finland had a special opportunity to attend a play by current Fulbright-University of Turku Scholar Richard McElvain. Immediately after the play, Fulbright attendees had a unique backstage moment with Richard McElvain where they had the opportunity to meet and talk with the writer/actor.

Fulbright Finland Capacity Building Workshop on Establishing Partnership Agreements with U.S. Universities to Increase Student Mobility

Fulbright Finland brought together 45 participants from over 20 different Finnish higher education institutions to a Fulbright Finland Capacity Building Workshop on March 14, 2018. Participants learned from expert speakers on partnership building with U.S. universities to increase student mobility, and exchanged ideas and best practices on how to attract U.S. students to Finland. Nordic & Baltic Fulbright Meeting

March 14, 2018

In conjunction with the Making Democracies Resilient to Modern Threats seminar, the Fulbright Finland Foundation also organized a regional meeting of Fulbright grantees and alumni from all of the Nordic and Baltic countries. The purpose of the meeting was to create new networks in the region as well as to talk about the seminar theme and the ways in which Fulbright as a program is responding to current and global challenges.

Making Democracies Resilient to Modern Threats

March 14, 2018

A Fulbright Finland seminar titled “Making Democracies Resilient to Modern Threats” was organized in March 2018 by the Fulbright Finland Foundation in cooperation with the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office, the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the United States Department of State, and hosted by the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki. The seminar was attended by over 190 government officials, academic researchers, senior field experts, technology experts, corporate advisors, journalists and media professionals. The seminar focused on the entirely new challenges that democratic societies, institutions, and individual citizens are facing in the modern era: network-based intrusions, misinformation and ‘fake news,’ influence campaigns, and many more.The seminar highlighted a wide range of threats and provided strategies for institutions and individuals to understand and deal with them.

During the orientation seminar the Fulbrighters were introduced to Finnish education system as well as Finnish sports, culture, history, and language.

Fulbright Finland Foundation and the University of Helsinki renewed their Fulbright Bicentennial Chair agreement. The signing was followed by the inaugural lecture "'If You Don't Speak, No One Will Listen': Why Everyone Should Know Clyde Warrior’s Name" by the current Chair, Daniel Cobb.

Fulbright Finland Thanksgiving Events

November 23-24, 2017

Fulbright Finland had an eventful two-day Thanksgiving with the current U.S. Fulbrighters with a visit to the Fazer chocolate factory, introduction to Finnish floorball and a traditional potluck Thanksgiving dinner at the Bicentennial Residence. We were also hosted for lunch and a great discussion with MP Antti Kurvinen and a tour of the beautifully renovated Parliament House.

30th Anniversary Celebration of the Fulbright Finland Foundation and the University of Eastern Finland Collaboration

Fulbright Finland and University of Eastern Finland Celebrated 30 Years of Collaboration! The partners celebrated at the Saastamoinen Foundation in Helsinki with key representatives from both foundations, the U.S. Embassy, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, together with past and current leadership of the University of Eastern Finland as well as alumni of the joint grant programs. During the event, the Fulbright Finland Foundation, the Saastamoinen Foundation and the University of Eastern Finland also renewed their cooperation agreements for the Fulbright-Saastamoinen Foundation Distinguished Chairs and Fulbright-Saastamoinen Foundation Grants. Fulbright Dialogue on Mechanisms of Radicalization and Sense of Inclusion

October 17, 2017

Fulbright Dialogue on Mechanisms of Radicalization and Sense of Inclusion brought together experts from diverse backgrounds to share their views and expertise with others. Professor Muqtedar Khan from the University of Delaware gave the participants an introduction to the theme. The event was hosted by the Ministry of the Interior.

XXV American Voices Seminar

The 25th American Voices Seminar took place at the University of Turku on October 6-7, 2017. The U.S. Fulbrighters currently in Finland presented on a wide array of topics related to American culture, history and society.
