Module 1: Getting Started with Practical Matters 2023-24

Back to main page.

Learning Objective of the Module:

To be confident in how to proceed with the visa process and other practical arrangements.

STEP 1: Familiarize Yourself with the Guide for Going to the U.S.

Because there are altogether over 20 grant programs to the U.S., some information in the Orientaatio-opas is not relevant for everyone. If you are participating in the SUSI or Travel Grant programs, please click on your program box below to see which sections in the guide concern you.

STEP 2: Fill out and submit the Fact sheet and photo

Throughout the year we are often asked about what our grantees are doing during their grant period. This is why we are asking you to fill out the information requested in the fact sheet. The information you give us will be made public and is published, for example, on the Fulbright Finland Foundation website as part of the grantee CV catalogue. You can see previous years' catalogs here.

  • Follow the instructions on the fact sheet document and return the filled fact sheet as a Word file to the Dropbox folder indicated by your program coordinator by the deadline given to you.
  • Submit a good quality photo in JPEG or PNG format in the same Dropbox folder.

STEP 3: Get started with the visa process (unless you are a Travel Grantee)

  • Familiarize yourself with the general visa information on the Guide for Going to the U.S.
  • At the bottom of the page, see the program-specific information (ohjelmakohtaiset lisätiedot).
  • Per the program-specific instructions, return the documentation required for the DS-2019 form to your program coordinator as separately instructed.

STEP 4: Grant Dates and Terms

  • Let your program coordinator know your exact and final grant dates as soon as you know them.
  • Once the dates are confirmed, the Foundation will send you the Terms of Award and Acceptance of Grant document to sign.
  • Sign the document and return it to your program coordinator as instructed separately.
  • Please also submit to the Foundation any documentation required by the program partner (not applicable to all the programs).
TASK: Read through the relevant sections (as indicated above) from the Guide for Going to the U.S. before the Program-Specific Online Meeting with your program coordinator.
  • Visa process (if applicable)
  • Insurance
  • Housing (if applicable)
  • Opening a bank account (if applicable)
