Accessibility and Disability Services

The Finnish Non-Discrimination Act ensures equal treatment for all, including in higher education and research settings. Public spaces, transportation, and educational institutions in Finland are generally well-equipped to accommodate individuals with disabilities. If you are a student or researcher from the United States planning to study, teach, or conduct research in Finland, this guide will help you navigate the available accessibility resources and services.

Info Finland provides a comprehensive page about services for disabled persons. The page also includes information for disabled children and persons with mental disabilities.

Higher Education Institutions' Accessibility Services

Most universities and research institutions in Finland have dedicated accessibility services. These may include:

  • Accessible classrooms, laboratories, and libraries
  • Assistive technology and learning accommodations
  • Support services for students with learning disabilities, physical impairments, or sensory disabilities
  • Personal study support, such as note-taking assistance or flexible exam arrangements
  • Disability coordinators or accessibility officers to provide individual guidance

Most universities offer individualized arrangements to support students with different abilities. Here are a few examples of disability services available in Finnish universities: University of HelsinkiAalto University, and University of Eastern Finland. If you require specific accommodations, contact the international office or accessibility coordinator at your host institution well in advance of your arrival or already during the application phase.
