Completing a Full Graduate Degree Program In Finland (Degree Student)

Applying for a Graduate Degree Program

If you wish to enroll in a full graduate degree program in Finland (Master's or Doctoral), you must independently apply for admission to the university. Find out the university application procedure and deadlines on the university's website or contact the program coordinator or the university's international office directly.

Please pass on the Information on the Fulbright U.S. Student Program handout to your university contact person when beginning to arrange an affiliation.

Steps and Required Documents

  1. Submit the university application as early as allowed by the university application schedule.

  2. If you have already received a university admission letter by the Fulbright application deadline, attach it to your Fulbright application. If you do not have the university admission letter by the Fulbright application deadline due to the university application schedule (i.e. the Fulbright application period closes before the university application period begins), explain this situation and the university application schedule clearly in your Fulbright application (for example in the study plan section) and submit the university application as soon as the university application period opens.

  3. When you have submitted your university application, please submit a verification of the submission in PDF format to the Fulbright Finland Foundation using this Dropbox link. You can request a statement from the university which verifies that you have submitted the application or if you received an automated message from the application system about successfully submitting the application, you can send this message to the Fulbright Finland Foundation instead.

NOTE: You do not need to ask for a separate letter of affiliation from the degree program you are applying to for the Fulbright application. An admission letter or a verification of a submitted application to the university is enough. The admission letter or the verification of a submitted application can also be submitted to the Foundation after the Fulbright application period has closed (see point 3 above).

Student Benefits

Student benefits for Bachelor’s and Master’s level students usually include considerable discounts on public transportation and on-campus cafeterias, for example. If you are registered as a doctoral student in a Finnish university, your student benefits will be very limited. Confirm your rights for different benefits before your arrival to Finland with your host university's international office.
