Choosing which universities to apply to in the U.S. is a different task than deciding on schools in Finland. It requires somewhat more dedication due to the high number of outstanding universities available in the U.S. There are over 1 000 universities that offer graduate-level studies (i.e. master's and doctoral-level studies). This makes it essential to thoroughly research the programs and institutions. As a Fulbright grantee, particularly when you are entering a degree program in the U.S., you are supported by the Placement Service in finding university options that match your profile.
Often, Finns are familiar with only a few well-known U.S. universities and tend to limit their choices to those when considering possible host institutions. However, these so-called "name schools" represent just a small fraction of the excellent universities in the U.S. Many other institutions offer world-class programs, cutting-edge research opportunities, and strong faculty in specific fields. By broadening your search, you may find universities that are particularly strong in your field of interest, making them a better match for your academic goals, research interests, or personal preferences, and possibly offering more funding or flexibility.
There’s a whole world of excellent U.S. universities beyond the ones everyone’s heard of - don't limit your options!
Remember also that the U.S. universities you apply to must be accredited by a recognized accrediting agency or association as recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. You can check institution accreditations on the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs webpage. In some cases, a visiting student researcher's host organization can be a research center or other suitable organization. Read more about accreditation on our webpage (in Finnish).
