Do you need a residence permit for Finland? Most do.

Back to the main page

Learning objectives: Understanding the urgency of getting the residence permit application started and how to begin the process.

How long is your stay?

  • If your total stay in Finland exceeds 90 days, you must apply for a Finnish residence permit well before arriving to stay legally in the country. The same applies to accompanying family members.
  • Grantees are personally responsible for obtaining the required residence permit.

When should you start the application?

  • Begin your application several months before departing from the U.S., ideally, 5 months before arriving in Finland.

How to apply?

Use the Guide for Coming to Finland to:

  • Identify the correct residence permit category for your situation
  • Follow the application instructions carefully
  • Don’t forget you will need to have your U.S. passport for the residence permit application.

Note: You don’t need to wait for your Fulbright medical clearance to apply for a Finnish residence permit. It is unrelated to Finnish immigration procedures.
