Learning objectives: To get inspired to learn about Finnish culture and language, and to learn about ways to study Finnish language before and during my grant term in Finland.
Languages
Did you know that Finland has more than one official language and other languages whose users’ rights are laid down in law? Read about the languages of Finland on the Institute for the Languages of Finland (KOTUS) website.
Many former U.S. Fulbright grantees have agreed that some level of Finnish language competency is appreciated, although it is possible to get by speaking English.
Consider attending Finnish language and culture courses or special Summer or Winter Schools to begin learning Finnish and gaining an understanding of the culture. Note: Application deadlines for these courses can be very early, for example, in May for the Jyväskylä Intensive Finnish Language and Culture Summer Course.
