Module 7: In the U.S.

This module provides you with information on practicalities that are important in the beginning of your grant term and also information about things to do before departing from the U.S. In this module, you can also find some ideas how to share your Fulbright Finland experience because we (and others) want to hear your story!

Back to main page

Learning Objectives of the Module:

  • To become familiar with the practicalities to enjoy and carry out a successful grant term.
  • To inspire you to carry out your ambassadorial role as a Fulbright Finland Foundation grantee.
  • To facilitate a smooth departure from the U.S.

Check-List

Carefully review the check-list for grantees in the U.S., which also includes information on what to do before departure from the U.S.

Please note that your own check-list will depend on your grant program and individual circumstances.

Finnish Fulbright Welcome Network

You might have already been in touch with the alumni in the Finnish Fulbright Welcome Network while preparing for your grant term, but just as a reminder, feel free to take advantage of this wonderful networking opportunity also when you are in the U.S. Members of the Welcome Network have all volunteered to help, and look forward to meeting you. You may even get to experience Thanksgiving, Halloween, or other American traditions or holidays with them. Also, if you travel to another city in the U.S., you might want to check if there are any alumni to meet over a cup of coffee (or get some local sightseeing tips). Remember that they are also a great source of information in many practical matters.

You can access the Welcome Network list here (password has been shared with you earlier). Please contact your own program coordinator if you have problems in accessing the list. Please remember that the list is for your personal use only and not for distribution.

Mid-Term Meeting with Your Fellow Grantees

The Foundation will organize a virtual mid-term meeting for those grantees whose grant term is longer (does not concern travel grantees and SUSI's). This is an opportunity to share your experiences with us and with your fellow grantees, and raise any questions or concerns you may have. Even though there is this opportunity, please do not wait until the mid-term call with any urgent questions or concerns. We are always interested in hearing how the grantees are doing in the U.S., so do not hesitate to contact your own program coordinator at any point of your grant term.

You will receive an invitation for the mid-term meeting from your own program coordinator.

How Would You Like to Share Your Fulbright Finland Experience?

As an ambassador for the Fulbright Finland Foundation, you have an important role in sharing the impact of the Fulbright Finland exchanges. With your story, you can inspire others to apply for the programs, and also help us to communicate the importance of the exchanges to our partners.

There are many ways to do this, see below for some examples:

  • Are you interested in writing a blog post about your experiences? We have compiled instructions for writing a blog post for our website: www.fulbright.fi/blog-instructions-fulbright-finland-grantees-and-alumni
  • Would you like to take over our Instagram account and share a day or two of a Fulbright Finland grantee’s life?
  • Remember to tag us to your social media posts so we will get a notification and can reshare your posts.
  • If you would like to organize an information session online or in person to promote Fulbright opportunities for your host or home institution, please let us know and we will provide you with some ready-made materials.

These are just a few examples, and you can find more ideas in the module 2 - please feel free to choose the way that suits you the best!

TASK: Think of a way you would like to share your Fulbright Finland experience, and let your Program Coordinator and/or Maija ([email protected]) know.

Please note that these pages are for the Fulbright Finland Foundation grantees only and not to be shared publicly.
